The Clay

Earth with a memory.

The quarry exposes a narrow seam of iron-rich clay laid down beneath the ridge. It is not uniform, and that is precisely why we use it.

Every bucket holds a slightly different balance of sand, stone and mineral. The finished object begins with those differences rather than trying to erase them.

Gathered in short seasons

We dig only when the face is dry enough to read. Pale clay, red seams and harder stone are separated at the quarry and carried back to the studio in small loads.

Cleaned, not neutralised

The material is soaked, mixed and passed through a broad screen. We remove roots and large stones but keep the smaller mineral fragments that give the body its density and broken surface.
